What subjects are included in the classical liberal arts?

The classical liberal arts are divided into two parts: the Trivium and the Quadrivium. These form the foundation of a traditional education and were studied by the saints, scholars, and doctors of the Church throughout history.

The Trivium includes Grammar, Logic, and Rhetoric. These are the arts of language and reasoning. Grammar teaches the correct use of language, Logic teaches sound reasoning, and Rhetoric teaches the art of persuasive and orderly communication.

The Quadrivium includes Arithmetic, Geometry, Music, and Astronomy. These are the mathematical arts. Arithmetic is the study of number in itself, Geometry is number in space, Music is number in time, and Astronomy is number in motion.

In addition to the Trivium and Quadrivium, a complete classical Catholic education also includes classical philosophy and Catholic theology. These subjects form the higher studies and complete the path to wisdom. Philosophy includes studies in ethics, metaphysics, and natural philosophy. Theology focuses on divine truth as revealed by God and taught by the Catholic Church.

Together, these subjects form the full curriculum of the classical liberal arts, aiming not just at academic success but at the formation of the whole person in truth and virtue.
