The Classical Liberal Arts Academy (CLAA) is designed to support mastery learning. Students are never locked out of assessments and are always free to review and resubmit their work. This allows students to improve their understanding and their grades without penalty.
1. All Assessments Remain Open
- Quizzes, tests, exams, and written assignments can be reviewed and resubmitted at any time.
- There are no limits on the number of attempts a student may make.
- The goal is to encourage mastery, not to penalize early mistakes.
2. How to Review or Retake an Assessment
- Return to the course page in Moodle.
- Locate the quiz, test, exam, or written assignment you want to review.
- Click on the activity to reopen it.
- For quizzes and exams: click “Attempt quiz” again to retake it.
- For written assignments: click “Add submission” or “Edit submission” to revise and resubmit your work.
3. Only the Highest Score Counts
- Moodle automatically records multiple attempts.
- Only the highest score is used in the course gradebook.
- This means students can work to improve their score without risk of lowering their grade.
4. Immediate Updates
- Once a new attempt is submitted, the updated score appears instantly in the gradebook.
- Activity completion is also updated automatically if the passing score is reached.
- Students can return to previous assessments as often as needed to reach their desired level of mastery.
5. Recommended Use
- Use retakes to strengthen understanding, not just to raise a score.
- Review lesson material thoroughly before retaking an assessment.
- Revise written assignments carefully, making use of grading feedback to improve quality.
Summary
- All assessments remain open for review and resubmission at any time.
- Students can simply reopen any activity from the course page to retake or revise it.
- Only the highest score counts toward the course grade.
- Grades and activity completion update automatically after each submission.
- This system encourages continuous learning and mastery without penalty.
